We are City National Bank. That’s what we’re called, yes. But what does it mean to be us?
From the beginning in 1907 when our first president, Mr. Cyrus P. Treat opened the doors of this bank, we’ve worked every day to build something. Our obvious purpose as a bank would be to take in deposits, lend out money, keep our customers’ wealth secure and put it to good use, to provide a good return to our shareholders and to be compliant to the rules and regulations handed down by the government. All of those are good and necessary things in order to be a responsible financial institution, but we’ve built so much more over the last century of doing business.
We are a community bank by definition, but we believe there’s more to that label than being locally owned and run. Community is more than just a group of people living in the same area. Another definition of community is “A feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests and goals.” We feel a sense of fellowship with our customers because we share their interests. Their success is our success. A few concrete ways in which we do this are: involvement in community events through volunteerism and financial investment, supporting local non-profit organizations and youth events, and providing financial literacy training through various community organizations. We live here. We work here. We know our community and we help to build our community up by contributing where we can. If you know us, we hope you agree with this statement. If you don’t know us yet, we hope you’ll give us an opportunity to prove it to you.
Please head over to our Community Stories section, where we post information and photos about our community involvement. Also posted there are the results of our recent Community Reinvestment Act examination in which we scored an “Outstanding.” This means that not only do we claim to be invested in our community, but an independent party has rated us “Outstanding” based on our community development activities. We are thrilled to have this rating and hope to continue the work that helped us earn it.
Our mission is to provide quality products and individualized solutions for our customers, offer opportunities that encourage personal and professional growth for our employees, contribute to our surrounding communities and generate a reasonable return to our shareholders.
The City National Bank of Metropolis was chartered in June of 1907 and opened for business in July of the same year with $50,000.00 in capital and deposits of $20,000.00.
The bank was first located in the W.H. Kraper building on Sixth and Market Streets and started with five employees.
The founders quickly developed plans to construct a permanent bank building on the corner of Fifth and Ferry Streets, which still houses the main location of City National Bank today. The building was completed in 1909 for a cost of $15,000.00. It consisted of three entrances, two teller windows (one for business and one for talking), a vault, and a work area. In addition to the banking area, a beauty shop was located on the first floor, and the second floor was used by various businesses.
As City National Bank progressed, remodeling and enlarging the building was necessary to accommodate the needs of the growing bank. However, because of World War II, the actual renovation was delayed until 1947. This first major remodeling increased the number of teller windows to five, and the bank expanded to include the entire ground floor, more than doubling it in size.
Other remodeling and construction projects have improved and added amenities to the building, with the largest and most recent building expansion being completed in 1996, when a two-story, 3,800 square foot addition was built on the west side of the bank. At the same time, the interior was remodeled. To complement the appearance of the original facade, the bank ordered limestone blocks from the same general area near Bedford, IN where the blocks for the original building were purchased.
In August 2006, construction of a branch location of City National Bank was completed near the intersection of U.S. Highway 45 and Interstate 24. This 4,000 square foot, state-of-the-art building provides full-service banking with lobby teller windows, drive-through lanes, loan offices, and a safe deposit box vault.
As of August 2021, City National bank has 51 employees.
In the past 114 years, seven men have served as President of City National Bank:
The current Board of Directors consists of Thomas F. Mittendorf, Rick Kotter, Tom Pullen, Steve Vogt, Rodger Harrison, Bruce Eckenberg, Richard Kruger , and Ben Schmidt
Throughout the years, the Boards of Directors, officers, and employees of City National Bank have continued to demonstrate the same faith and confidence in Metropolis and Massac County that was originally expressed by the founders of the bank.
